New start for old troupe
Alphabet
Theatre – is a new start for an old troupe. After 11 seasons and 28 productions,
the founders of Mayfield Youth Theatre have decided to move from Mayfield Methodist
Church in Chesterland to a new home. Well sort of. As of this date, we are
still looking for most things a theatre troupe needs. We need things like
rehearsal space, performance space and as with all small (and large) theatre
companies – more funding.
What makes us different from other youth theatres? Unlike other area youth theatres, Alphabet Theatre
does not charge participation fees and also has a no cut policy so we find
parts for everyone. Yes, everyone. Able bodied or Differently Abled. With Jill's background in education and Social and Emotional Learning, we have a good base to serve ALL youth. Churched or unchurched - you don't have to believe in God, go to church, or any other house of worship: Here's what we believe. Everyone is a Child of God and a Person of Worth. We are called to love everyone as God loves us. We are called to create a community of love and support for everyone. We take our beliefs quite seriously - but it's OK if you don't have beliefs - God created you - that's good enough for us.
Alphabet
Theatre continues the work that was begun as Mayfield Youth Theatre. So what is
different? Alphabet Theatre is no longer affiliated with a single church. We have always been an open and inclusive
ministry accepting all youth grades 6 – 12 regardless of race, religion,
identity, learning difference, or social class. This ministry
goes beyond the doors of any one church to create a safe, welcoming, community
and help kids grow through the transformative power of theatrical arts.
Why Alphabet
Theatre - There are many letters in the alphabet... ADD, ADHD, AU, BD, CD, CP, DD,
DS, ED, FAS, GT, HI, LD, OCD, ODD, OHI, OI, PDD, TBI, VI, LBGTQ... We want to
let all children know that letters do not define us - in fact they all work
together to make us greater than our labels. When we put all our letters together,
we are able to form words that empower, words that support, words that create,
and more words to show love for all. Who you are, what you are, how you
identify aren’t issues we care about, as long as you are open to others and
willing to learn and trust and build community you are welcome at Alphabet
Theater.
Plans for
this fall include a musical (Cotton Patch Gospel – pending license approval)
performed at various locations the first two weekends in November (pending –
performance space and rehearsal space and a little extra funding). The saying is the show must go on and we are
going to do everything possible to make it happen.
